B2.5 Proteins Flashcards
What is an enzyme?
A biological catalyst made from protein.
What do biological catalysts do to the rate of reactions?
Speed them up without being changed or used up in the reaction.
Do enzymes speed up the rate of reactions? If so, why?
Enzymes do speed up the rate of reactions because they are biological catalysts.
What are enzymes produced by?
Living things.
Why do enzymes denature?
Enzymes denature because the temperature exceeds 60ºC or the pH levels change.
What are all enzymes (apart from biological catalysts)?
Proteins.
What are proteins made up of?
Chains of amino acids that are folded into unique shapes.
What do proteins act as?
Structural components of tissue, hormones and antibodies.
Evaluate the use of enzymes
Advantages- saves money in production cost and they make the reaction more efficient
Disadvantages- pure enzymes are very expensive to produce and they are very sensitive to conditions like pH and temperature
Name 4 foods which contain protein
Meats, eggs, beans and fish
Describe the uses of proteins in the body
Growth + repair
Cell repair and cell
