B2.3 - Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon Dioxide + Water —(light energy+chlorophyll)—> Glucose + Oxygen
Describe the process of photosynthesis:
- light energy is absorbed by a green substance called chlorophyll
- this energy is used by converting carbon dioxide and water (from the soil) into glucose
- oxygen is released as a by-product.
What factors can affect the rate of photosynthesis?
- light intensity
- temperature
- carbon dioxide concentration
How can glucose be stored?
When it is turned into insoluble starch by the plant.
What do plants use some of the glucose produced by photosynthesis for?
- Respiration
- To produce fat or oil for storage
- To produce cellulose to strengthen the cell wall
- To produce protiens
What else do plants need to produce proteins?
Nitrate ions from the soil.
Where do plants get water from?
The soil
Where do plants get carbon dioxide from?
The air
What are stomata?
Pores in the surface of the leaf which let carbon dioxide in and oxygen out
What are the cells called which open and close the stomata?
Guard cells.
What is the glucose produced by the plant used for?
‘Food’ within the plant
