B2.2 - Tissues, Organs and Organ Systems Flashcards
Why does cell differentiation occur?
Large multicellular organisms develop systems for exchanging materials. During the development of a multicellular organism, cells differentiate so that they can perform different functions.
Name and describe three different types of tissue:
- Muscular Tissue: Can contract to bring about movement
- Glandular Tissue: can produce substances such as enzymes and hormones
- Epithelial Tissue: covers some part of the body
Describe the functions of 3 types of tissue found in the stomach:
- Muscular Tissue: to churn the contents
- Glandular Tissue: to make digestive fluids
- Epithelial Tissue: to cover the inside and outside of the stomach
What are organ systems?
Groups of organs which perform a particular function.
What is the purpose of having GLANDS in the digestive system?
Glands such as the pancreas and salivary glands produce digestive fluids.
What is the purpose of the STOMACH and SMALL INTESTINE?
Where digestion occurs.
What is the purpose of the LIVER?
It produces bile.
What is the purpose of the SMALL INTESTINE?
Where the absorption of soluble food occurs.
What is the purpose of the LARGE INTESTINE?
Water is absorbed from the undigested food, forming faeces.
Name 3 plant organs:
Stem, root, leaf.
What is the purpose of epidermal tissues?
Covers the plant.
What is the purpose of mesophyll tissues?
Carries out photosynthesis.
What is the purpose of xylem and phloem tissues?
Transport substances around the plant.
