B2.1 - Cells and Simple Cell Transport Flashcards
What is the role of the NUCLEUS?
Controls the activities of the cell.
What is the role of the CYTOPLASM?
Where most of the chemical reactions take place.
What is the role of the CELL MEMBRANE?
Controls what goes in and out of the cell.
What is the role of the MITOCHONDRIA?
Where most energy is released in respiration.
What is the role of the RIBOSOMES?
Where protein synthesis occurs.
Name two features which only plant cells have, and their uses.
- Chloroplasts - where light energy is absorbed to make food.
- Vaculoe - filled with cell sap
Describe the structure of a a bacterial cell.
A cell membrane, filled with cytoplasm. They have no distinct nucleus, and the genes are housed by the cytoplasm.
Describe the structure of a yeast cell.
A single celled organism, with a nucleus, cell membrane and cytoplasm, surrounded by a cell wall.
What is diffusion?
A substance moving DOWN a concentration gradient, from an are of high concentration, to an area of low concentration.
How does the difference in concentration affect the rate of diffusion?
The greater the difference, the faster the rate of diffusion.
Name a substance transported through a cell membrane by diffusion.
Oxygen, for respiration.
