B2.2 Tissues, Organs and Organ Systems Flashcards
How do large multicellular organisms exchange and transport materials?
With different exchange systems e.g. the breathing system
What are exchange systems made up of?
Specialised cells
How are specialised cells developed?
Cells become specials for a particular job in Add to differentiation which occurs during the development of a multicellular organism
What is a tissue?
A group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function
What type of tissue to do mammals (like humans) have?
Muscular tissue, glandular tissue and epithelial tissue
What is the function of muscular tissue?
It contracts to move whatever it is attached to
What is the function of glandular tissue?
It makes and secretes substances like enzymes and hormones
What is the function of epithelial tissue?
It covers some parts of the body
What is an organ?
A group of different tissues that work together to perform a certain function
What tissues is the stomach made of? And what are their functions?
Muscular tissue: moves the stomach to churn up the food
Glandular tissue: makes digestive juices to digest food
Epithelial tissue: covers the outside and inside of the stomach
What is a organ system?
A group of organs working together to perform a particular function e.g. the digestive system
Order specialised cells, organs, tissues and organ systems from smallest to largest
Specialised cells -> Tissue -> Organ -> Organ system
What organs do plants have?
Stems, roots and leaves
What is the function of stems in plants?
They support the plant and assist in the transport of water/nutrients between the roots and the leaves
What is the function of roots in plants?
They absorb water and mineral ions and hold the plant in place
