B2.2 Flashcards
What is the word and symbol equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide+water->oxygen+glucose
CO2 + H2O -> O2 + C6H12O6
What happens during photosynthesis?
Chlorophyll in chloroplast absorbs light energy which is then used to convert CO2 from the air + H2O from the soil into C6H12O6.
The chemical reaction produces oxygen as a by-product which is released into the air.
What is some of the glucose made converted to?
Insoluble starch and stored.
What can you use to find out if photosynthesis has taken place? How?
Iodine solution because it will turn the starch into a dark blue colour.
Give 5 plant adaptations:
- leaves are broad giving them a big surface area
- contain chlorophyll to absorb light energy
- have air spaces that allow CO2 to get to the cells and oxygen to leave via diffusion
- have veins which bring plenty of water to the cells of the leaves
What do plants need to grow?
Light
Warmth
Carbon dioxide
How does light effect amount of photosynthesis?
The brighter the light, the faster the rate of photosynthesis.
How does temperature effect the amount of photosynthesis?
It’s controlled by enzymes and most enzymes are destroyed once it reaches 40-50degrees.
If the temperature gets too high the enzymes denature.
How does CO2 levels effect the amount of photosynthesis?
Increasing the CO2 levels will increase the rate of photosynthesis.
Atmosphere only contains 0.04% CO2.
How do plants use glucose? What are the by-products?
They respire all the time and they use some of the glucose produced during photosynthesis.
Glucose is broken down using O2 to provide energy for the cells.
CO2 and H2O are the by-products.
What is the energy released in respiration used for?
To build up smaller molecules in pro bigger molecules.
How do plants make amino acids by using some of the glucose from photosynthesis?
Combining sugars and nitrate ions and other mineral ions from the soil.
What is glucose, from photosynthesis, and energy, from respiration, used for?
Build up fats and oils.
What would happen if glucose was stored in plant cells?
It would affect the way water moves into and out of the cells.
What do may plants produce? What’s their purpose?
Tubers and bulbs which help them to survive through the winter.
