B2 - Plant Cells Flashcards
Where is the leaf is the stomata found
Lower epidermis
What is the meristem tissue and where is it found
Found at the very tips of the roots and shoots of plants, made up off plant stem cells that differentiate into whatever the plant needs
What 2 leaf structures help minimise water loss
Waxy cuticle which is impermeable to water
Guard cells which can close stomata
What is an advantage of the upper epidermis
The upper epidermis is transparent To allow light to pass though and reach the palisade mesophyll cells, which is where photosynthesis happens
Is the leaf an organ or tissue
The leaf is an organ
Name one advantage of the the spongy mesophyll layer
The spongy mesophyll layer contains so many air gaps to allow carbon dioxide to fissure from the stomata to the palisade mesophyll cells
How does the level of water in the plant affect the opening and closing of stomata
When there is plenty of water in the plant, the guard cells become turgid, which opens the stomata to allow photosynthesis by letting in CO2
When there us not very much water in the plant, the guard cells become flaccid, which closes the stomata to mantain the water vapour inside the plant.
What is the waxy cuticle
A thin part of the cell that impermeable to water and is a layer of lipids
What are the stomata between
2 guard cells
What name is given to the lower epidermis, bottom of the plant openings that allow carbon dioxide into the plant
Stomata
