b2 - organization Flashcards
what is a tissue
a group of cells with a similar structure and function
what is an organ
group of tissues working together to perform a specific function
what do digestive enzymes do
convert food into smaller molecules so it can be absorbed in the bloodstream
what do carbohydrase do
break down carbohydrates into simple sugars
what is amylase
a carbohydrase that breaks down starch
what do protease do
break down proteins to amino acids
what does lipase do
break down lipids (fats) to glycerol and fatty acids
where is bile made and stored
made in liver
stored in gall bladder
what does bile do
it is alkaline so it neutralises the hydrochloric acid in the stomach. it also emulsifies fat to form small droplets which increases the surface area. this all increases the rate of fat breakdown by lipase
what to use to test for sugars
benedicts solution
what to use to test for starch
iodine
what to use to test for protein
biuret solution
where does the right ventricle pump blood to
lungs for gaseous exchange
where does the left ventricle pump blood to
around the rest of the body
how is the natural resting heart rate controlled
by a group of cells in the right atrium that act as a pacemaker
