B2 - Cells, Tissues and Organs Flashcards
What are the three main organs in plants?
Leaves
Stem
Roots
What transports water around a plant?
Xylem Tubes
What transports glucose around a plant?
Phloem Tubes
Define tissue.
A group of specialised cells which do a particular job. All the specialised cells are identical.
Define organ system.
A group of organs working together to do a particular job.
eg. reproductive system, digestive system, skeletal system, respiratory system.
What is the function of epidermal tissue?
Found in plants, it covers and protects surfaces.
What is the function of mesophyll tissue?
It is found within a leaf. It carries lots of chloroplasts to carry out photosynthesis.
What is the function of muscular tissue?
To contract to bring about movement.
What is the function of glandular tissue?
Contains cells which secrete substances, e.g. hormones, enzymes.
What is the function of epithelial tissue?
To cover and protect surfaces such as the outside of the body (skin) as well as internal organs.
