B1a Flashcards
Name all of the features of an animal cell.
Cytoplasm, nucleus, cell membrane, ribosome, mitochondrion.
Name all of the features of a plant cell.
Cytoplasm, nucleus, cell membrane, cell wall, ribosome, mitochondrion, permanent vacuole, chloroplast.
What is the equation for magnification (M).
magnification(M)= image size(I) / actual size(A)
Name all the features of a bacterial cell.
Cell membrane, bacterial DNA, cell wall, plasmid, cytoplasm.
What is stage 1 of the cell cycle?
Growth and DNA synthesis; increase of ribosomes and mitochondria, replicating DNA.
What is the function of adult bone marrow?
Can form many types of human cells e.g. blood cells.
What is the use of Human Embryonic stem cells?
May be able to help conditions such as diabetes and paralysis.
What is mitosis?
The division of the two nucleuses before cell division.
Why is cell differentiation important?
Without this ability our bodies wouldn’t develop or function properly.
Name a feature of a nerve.
Long branched connections / insulating sheath.
What is a Eukaryotic cell?
A cell which has a cell membrane, cytoplasm and genetic material enclosed in a nucleus e.g. plant or animal cell.
What type of cell is a bacterial cell?
Prokaryotic cell.
What is the purpose of the xylem?
To transport water and minerals from the roots to the stem and leaves (transpiration).
Name an example of a specialised animal cell.
Nerve / sperm / muscle.
What is the purpose of a muscle.
To contract and relax.
