B15 Sexual reproduction in plants Flashcards
Pollination
the transfer of pollen grains from the male part of the plant (anther of stamen) to the female part of the plant (stigma)
Male gamete in plants
pollen
Function of petals
Brightly colored to attract insects
Function of stamen
The anther and filament of the plant. Long so that it is close to the stigma, and easily accessible to the insect. There are many anthers to increase the chances of insects carrying across pollen grains.
Function of carpel
The stigma, style and ovary of the plant. It is long and close to the stamen; there is only one carpel in each flower
Function of sepal
To protect the flower when it’s breeding
Function of nectary
To attract insects
The stages leading up to fertilization in plants
1) The forms a pollen tube
2) The pollen tube grows down the style by digesting the tissues of the style with enzymes
3) As the pollen tube grows it carries the pollen tube nucleus with it
4) When it reaches the ovary it enters the ovule through the micropyle
Why are there 2 nuclei in a plant
1 is for stored food, 1 is for fusing with egg nucleus
Micropyle
A small hole that allows pollen tube to enter down into the pollen tube nucleus
