B15 Human Impacts on the Environment Flashcards
What is biodiversity?
The variety of species on Earth or within an ecosystem
Why is biodiversity important?
Helps ensure that ecosystems are stable
What 3 areas does pollution affect?
-Land
-Air
-Water
List 4 consequences of global warming:
-Rising sea levels
-Changes in organism distribution
-Changes in migration patterns
-Less biodiversity
How does global warming affect organism distribution?
Species that require warm conditions may become more widely distributed, and the opposite is true for ones that need cooler conditions
List the 4 main things that humans use land for:
-Building
-Quarrying
-Farming
-Dumping waste
What is peat made up of?
Partially decayed remains of plants in bogs
How can peat release CO2?
-When burned as a fuel
-When decayed by microorganisms in contact with the air
List 3 examples of biodiversity protection programmmes:
-Breeding programmes
-Regeneration of rare habitats
-Reintroduction of hedgerows around farmland
What are the disadvantages of maintaining biodiversity?
-Expense
-Loss of jobs
-Food security issues
Why is deforestation carried out?
-To clear land for farming
-To grow crops for biofuels
List 3 consequences of deforestation:
-Less biodiversity
-Greater CO2 release
-Less CO2 taken in
