B15 Ecology Flashcards
Habitat
The part of an
ecosystem where an
organism lives.
Species
This is a group of
organisms that can
breed together to produce fertile offspring.
Population
This is the organisms of
the same species that
share a particular
habitat.
Community
This is made up of all the
organisms that share a
particular habitat.
Competition
A word that describes
the fact that organisms
often need the same Resource
Interdependent
A word that describes
how organisms rely on
and impact upon each
other.
Biotic factors
Other living things that can affect a particular population e.g. any pathogen or parasite
Abiotic factors
Nonliving things that can affect a particular population e.g. light intensity
What resources do animals compete for ?
Animals compete for agitating to help prevent them becoming a meal for predators. And they compete for territory which means they will have their space which is needed for the animal to find food and reproduce. They also compete for females.
What resources the plants compete for ?
Some resources that plants compete for a light, nutrients space to grow and water they have to cope with competition and sometimes to reproduce successfully a plant has avoid competition with its seedlings.
What is an extremophile ?
An extremophile Are organisms adapted to live in extreme environments e.g. temperature, pH and salinity.
What is a structural adaptation?
Features related to physical structures – shape, colour
What is a behavioural adaptation?
Features related to short or long-term behaviours – migration, basking, tool use
What is a physiological/functional adaptation?
Features related to process – usually internal, cellular processes
