B15: Ecology Flashcards
What is a habitat?
The part of an ecosystem where an organism lives
What is a species?
A group of organisms that can breed together to produce fertile offspring
What is a population?
They are organisms of the same species that can share a particular habitat
What is a community?
This is made up of all of the organisms which share a habitat
What is competition?
A word which describes the fact that all organisms often need the same resources
What does it mean to be interdependent?
It means how organisms rely on and impact upon each other
What are biotic factors?
Living things which can affect a particular population
What are abiotic factors?
Non living thing which can affect a particular population
Give Three examples of biotic factors
New pathogens/parasites
New predators
Competition between species
Give Three abiotic factors
Temperature
Oxygen availability
Carbon Dioxide availability
Which resources do animals compete for?
Food (prey for predators)
Water
A mate
Resting place/territory
Which resources do plants compete for?
Sunlight
Water
Minerals
