B1.4 - Interdependence and Adaption Flashcards
What do organisms need to survive and reproduce?
A supply of materials from their surroundings and from other living organisms there
What do plants have to compete for?
Light, space, water and nutrients from the soil
What do animals compete for?
Food, mates and teritory
How do organisms survive in their habitats?
They can adapt to the factors in the habitat.
What do some organisms who live in extreme environments have to adapt to?
Extremophiles may have t be tolerant to high levels of salt, high/low temperatures or high pressures
Name 2 extreme place i which animals may live:
The Arctic or the Sahara desert
How can animals adapt to dry environments?
- changes to surface area
- thickness of insulating coat
- amount of body fat
- camoflague
How can plants adapt to dry environments?
- changes to surface area
- water-storage tissues
- extensive root systems
How do changes in the environment affect organisms?
Changes can affect the distribution of organisms
What can living organisms be indicators of?
Pollution
What can lichens indicate?
Levels of pollution, in particular sulphur dioxide
How can invertebrate animal be used as indicator species?
They indicate water pollution levels, and the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the water
How can environmental changes be measured?
Using non-living indicators such as oxygen levels, temperature and rainfall
