B1.4 Flashcards
Relative light intensity
The distance of a light source compared to the strength of the light. Light intensity is inversely proportional to the square of the distance. 1/(distance from light source)^2
Inverse square law
When you double the distance from a light source, the light intensity falls by a factor of 4. y is proportional to 1/x^2
Chlorophyll
Green pigment in chloroplasts which trap energy from the sun
Rate of photosynthesis
1/t
Limiting factor
Factor which can prevent an increase in the rate of photosynthesis
Starch
A compound of glucose molecules used as a food store
Producers
Organisms that make their own food through the process of photosynthesis
Photosynthesis
Process by which producers make food
Biomass
The total mass of organisms in a given area
Endothermic
A chemical reaction in which energy is transferred from the surrondings to the reacting mixture
Stage 1
Light dependent stage where the energy transferred from light splits water into oxygen and hydrogen ions
Stage 2
Light independent stage where carbon dioxide combines with hydrogen ions to create glucose
Stomata
Small openings (pores) in a plants epidermis used to exchange gases
Carbon dioxide
A reactant in photosynthesis comprised of 2 oxygen molecules and 1 carbon molecule
Temperature
A measure of the heat of something
