What is a drug?
Any substance that changes the way the body works
What are the five types of drugs?

How do painkillers stop pain?
They block nerve impulses that come from swollen or damaged areas of the body
What do stimulants do?
Increase the speed of neurotransmission across synapses
What do depressants do?
Slow down the activity of neurones in the brain
What are some examples of painkillers?
Morphine, paracetamol
What do stimulants do to reaction times?
Decrease them
What are some examples of stimulants?
Caffeine, amphetamines
What type of drug is alcohol?
A depressant
What are reaction times?
The amount of time it takes to respond to a stimulus
Where are carcinogens from tobacco smoke found?
The tar
What part of tobacco causes cancers?
The carcinogens
Where do cancers from tobacco often develop?
The lungs and mouth
