What is homeostasis?
All functions of your body trying to maintain a ‘constant internal environment’
Three things homeostasis control
- iron content regulated by kidneys
- body temperature controlled by the brain (37 degrees)
- insulin helps maintain the right level of glucose in the body
What are statins?
A prescribed drug that lowers the risk of heart and circulatory diet. Also lowers blood cholesterol and the rick of heart disease in diabetics
What research has been done on statins?
- 6000 patients
- those who had previously taken statins and those who had not
- found no connections to the manufacturers
What is thalidomide and what was it intended for?
- Drug developed in the 1950’s
- meant as a sleeping pill
- later found out relieve morning sickness
Effects of thalidomide on pregnant women
- it had not been tested for morning sickness
* so was not know that it could pass through the placenta causing abnormal limb development
How many babies were effected by thalidomide? And later testing
- 10,000, only half survived
- the drug was banned
- introduced more vigorous testing
- had recently been found as a treatment for leprosy
What are the impact of legal drugs?
- smoking- can cause cancer, heart disease, lung-blood vessel-problems. It’s addictive
- alcohol-affects nervous system, impaired judgment, drinking too much can cause liver disease and Lung damage, is addictive
The effects of illegal drugs
•’hard’ and ‘soft’ drugs are all addictive, can cause heart and circulatory system problems
Two performing enhancing drugs
- anabolic steroids (increase muscle size)
* stimulates ( increase heart rate)
For performing enhancing drugs
- up to athletes the risks they wanna take
* unfair some athletes have better equipment, coaches etc
Against performing enhancing drugs
- unfair to get an advantage
* some athletes are not fully aware of he health risks
