B1.2 Animal & Plant Cells Flashcards
What is the average size range of animal cells?
10um - 30um
What are the features of an animal cell?
Nucleus (10um diameter) Cytoplasm Cell membrane Mitochondria Ribosomes
What are the features of a plant cell? (Additional to that of an animal cell)
Cell wall
Chloroplasts
Permanent vacuole
What is the function of the nucleus?
To control the cell’s activities
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
A liquid gel in which the organelles are suspended and where many chemical reactions take place
What is the function of the cell membrane?
To control the movement of substances (glucose and mineral ions) into the cell and other substances (urea and hormones) out of the cell
What is the function of mitochondria?
1-2um by 0.2-0.7um
Where is energy is transferred during aerobic respiration
What is the function of the cell wall?
Made of cellulose for support
What is the function of chloroplasts?
3-5um
Contain chlorophyll for photosynthesis
Why are onions not green?
Their cells do not contain chloroplasts or chlorophyll as they grow underground (without light)
