B1 Cells & Organisation Flashcards
What is used to form an image in a light microscope?
A beam of light
What is used to form an image in an electron microscope?
A beam of electrons
What is the magnification and resolving power of a light microscope?
x2000 magnification (school microscopes usually up to x400)
200nm resolving power
What is the magnification and resolving power of an electron microscope?
x2,000,000 magnification
0.2nm resolving power
Comparison between light and electron microscopes
Light - can view living objects, cheap, easy to carry around
Electron - cannot view living objects, expensive, need to be kept in special conditions
What are the two types of electron microscope?
Transmission electron microscope - gives 2D images
Scanning electron microscope - gives 3D images but lower magnifications
What is the equation that relates magnification, image size and object size?
Magnification = image size/object size
