What are the 6 glands?
Pituitary, Thyroid, Pancreas, Adrenal, Ovaries (female) and Testes (male)
What is the role of the Pituitary gland?
- Controls growth in children
- Stimulates thyroid gland to make thyroxine to control the rate of metabolism
- In women it ovaries to produce and release eggs and produce oestrogen
In men it stimulates the testes to make sperm and produce testosterone.
What is the role of the Thyroid gland?
Controls the metabolic rate of the body
What is the role of the Pancreas gland?
Controls the levels of glucose in the blood
What is the role of the adrenal gland?
Prepares the body for stressful situations, produces adrenaline.
What is the role of the ovaries?
Controls the development of the female secondary sexual characteristics and is involved in the menstrual cycle.
What is the role of the testes?
Controls the development of the male secondary sexual characteristics and is involved in the production of sperm.
What is the endocrine system?
A system that secretes chemicals called hormones directly into the bloodstream. The blood carries the hormone to its target organ(s) when it produces the effect.
What hormone controls your blood glucose concentration?
Insulin
What does glucagon do?
Makes the liver break down glucose, converting it back into glucose.
