B11 Hormonal Control Flashcards
What does insulin do
Lowers blood glucose levels
What is the purpose of adrenaline
Prepares your body for fight or flight
What is the endocrine system
The collection of glands that produce hormones to regulate your body
What does to much glucose do to your cells
Forces water out by osmosis
Function of glucagon
Increases blood glucose levels
How does insulin decrease glucose levels
Insulin allows glucose to move from your blood into your cells by binding to receptor cells and telling them to open
What organ controls the levels of the hormones insulin and glucagon
Pancrease
Symptoms of type 2 diabetes
Obesity, tiredness, rapid weight loss
How can you diagnose type 1 or 2 diabetes
Blood test
How can you aid with type 2 diabetes
Balanced diet, consistent excersize, losing weight, controlling the smount of carbs you eat
What is type one diabates
your pancrease can no longer produce insulin
What is the purpose of thyroxine
Used to control how quickly substances are broken down and built up
What is used to create thyroxine
Iodine
What does rising oestrogen levels cause
Growth spurt, growth in hair under arms ans pubic hair regions, breast developement, skin darkens
What does Follicle stimulating gland do
Cause the eggs in the ovary to mature
What does the luteinising hormone do
Stimulates the release of the egg at ovulation
What do oestrogen and progesterone do
Stimulates the build up snd maintenence of the uterus lining
What happens during menstruation (days 1-6)
Uterus lining breaks, pituatary gland releases FSH
What happens during proliferation (days 6-13)
Eggs begin to develope, lining begins to repair,
What does oestrogen do during proliferation
Stops FSH (prevents more eggs developing) Triggers LH which thickens the uterus lining
What happens during ovulation (day 14)
Follicle releases egg,
High LH levels cause follicle to burst and release oviduct
List 4 ways infertility is caused
Obesity Age Lack of sperm Not enough FSH to stimulate maturation Eating disorders
How IVF treatment is carried out
Fertility drugs are used to make lots of eggs mature at the same time for collection
The eggs are collected and placed in a special solution in a petri dish
The eggs are checked to make sure they have been fertilised and the early embryos are developing properly
When the fertilised eggs have formed tiny balls of cells , 1 or 2 of the embryos are placed in the womb of the mother
Advantages of IVF treatment
Can help single woman and same sex couples
More successfull than IUI or other forms of assisted reproductive technology
Allows infertile men and woman to have children
Dissavantages of IVF
Very expensive Not always sucessful Can have health risks Emotionally snd physically stressful Increases the risk of multiple pregnancies
