B10: The Human Nervous System Flashcards
Cerebral cortex
Concerned with consciousness, intelligence, memory and language
Cerebellum
Coordinating muscular activity and balance
Medulla
Concerned with unconscious activities, such as your heart beat, movement of guts and breathing
What is homeostasis?
Conditions in the body are controlled to provide a constant internal environment
What internal conditions are included?
Body temperature.
Water content of the body.
Blood glucose concentration.
What is the function of a stimulus?
Change occurs in the internal environment
What is the function of receptors?
Cells detect change in internal or external environment
What is the function of the control center?
Where the brain is told conditions are not met. They send out impulses to nervous and hormonal system, spinal cord, and some organs such as the pancreas.
What is the function of the effector?
Where muscle or glands bring about a response to the stimulus which had been received
What do neurones do? State a feature of a neurone
They send electrical impulses around the body. They are long so it can travel impulses quicker.
What part of the body are your central nervous system?
Brain
Spinal cord
What are reflexes?
Actions to prevent harm to the body by responding rapidly to a stimulus. The person doesn’t think about there action
What are synapses?
Junctions which join neurones together
How do synapses work?
Diffuse chemicals across the synapse
