B10 - Human nervous system Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
Regulation of internal conditions of a cell or organism to maintain optimum conditions for function
What internal conditions are controlled by homeostasis?
Water content
Body temperature
Blood glucose concentration
What are receptor cells?
Detect stimuli in external or internal environment
What are the coordination centres?
Brain
Spinal cord
Other organs like Pancreas
What are effectors?
Muscles or glands that bring about a response
Why does the nervous system use electrical impulses?
Enables you to react quickly to your surroundings and coordinate your behaviour
What make up the central nervous system? (CNS)
Brain
Spinal cord
How does the nervous system work?
Stimulus -> Receptor -> Sensory Neurone -> Coordinator (CNS) -> Motor Neurone -> Effector -> Response
What are reflex actions?
Automatic and rapid. Do not involve conscious part of brain
What everyday bodily functions do reflex actions control?
Breathing
Digestion
What are the main stages of the reflex arc?
Stimulus -> Receptor -> Sensory Neurone -> Relay Neurone -> Motor Neurone -> Effector -> Response
