B1 - characteristics of living organisms Flashcards
what are the characteristics of living organisms?
MRS GREN
movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion and nutrition
define movement.
it’s an action by an organism or part of an organism causing a change of position or place
define respiration.
it’s the chemical reactions in cells that break down nutrient molecules and release energy for metabolism
define sensitivity.
it’s the ability to sense or detect stimuli in the internal or external environment and to make appropriate responses.
define growth
it’s the permanent increase in size and dry mass by an increase in cell number or cell size or both.
define reproduction
it’s the process that makes more of the same kind of organism
define excretion
it’s the removal from organisms of waste products of metabolism (chemical reactions in cells including respiration) toxic materials and substances in excess of requirements.
define nutrition.
it’s the taking in of materials for energy, growth and development. Plants require light, carbon dioxide, water and ions while animals require organic compounds, water and ions.
