B1 Flashcards
Osmosis
The net diffusion of water from dilute solution to concentrated across partially permeable membrane.
Isotonic
If the concentration of solution outside cell is same as the concentration inside cell.
Hypertonic
If the concentration of solution is higher than the concentration inside the cell
Hypotonic
If the concentration of the solution is lower than the concentration inside the cell.
Concentrated solution
A solution that has a higher amount of solute to solvent.
Dilute solution
A solution that has a higher amount of higher amount of solvent to solute.
Crenation
When animal cells are placed in a concentrated solution, lose water and shrivel.
Lysis
When animal cells are placed in a dilute solution, take in water and burst.
Active transport
When particles move from a low concentration to a high concentration across a partially permeable membrane. This requires energy.
Plants active transport
Mineral ions in soil are dilute and is more dilute within the plant root hair cells but active transport absorbs the minerals in.
How does diffusion differ to active transport?
Active transport goes up the concentration gradient whereas diffusion goes down.
Aveoli
When air is moved into and out of the lungs ventilating millions of tiny air sacs.
Stomata
Provides a large surface area to flat thin leaves to maintain a steep concentration gradient.
SA:V
Having a larger surface area to volume makes exchanging material easier because there is more space in which materials can enter.
