B Vitamins Flashcards
Thiamin (TPP)
Metabolism; needed for neurotransmitter synthesis and normal function
Riboflavin (FAD/FMN)
Metabolism; Deficiencies include infamation of the mouth and toungue and cracks in corner of the mouth.
Niacin (NAD)
Metabolism and lipid synthesis; Deficiencies include Pellagra: Diarrhea, dermatitis on areas exposed to sun, dementia.
Biotin
Part coenzyme required for replenishing oxaloacetate in the citric acid cycle’ required for lipid synthesis/ breakdown. Deficiencies include nausea, depression, hallucinations
Pantothenic acid
Metabolism and lipid synthesis/ breakdown. Deficiencies include Fatigue, rash
B6
Protein Metabolism, benefits the central nervous system. It is involved in producing the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine, and in forming myelin. deficiencies include nausea and anemia
Folate (DNA)
Folate is is needed to make red and white blood cells in the bone marrow, convert carbohydrates into energy, and produce DNA and RNA. Adequate folate intake is extremely important during periods of rapid growth such as pregnancy, infancy, and adolescence.
B12
folate metabolism; nerve function. Deficiencies incllude Pernicious anemia, macrocytic anemia, nerve damage
Vitamin C
Synthesis of cell membranes and neurotransmitters. Deficiencies include Liver dysfunction.
