B-lactam Antibiotics: Penicillins Flashcards
About Natural Penicillins
mostly gram + cocci, strep viridans, strep pyogenes
useful in syphilis, endocarditis, strep pneumonia, strep throat, group b strep
About Amino Penicillins
Otitis media & sinusitis where resistance to H flu and strep pneumonia is low, community acquired pneumonia w/o co morbids.
endocarditis prophylaxis
simple UTIs
About Antipsuedomonal Penicillins
Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratis sp., Klebsiella sp.
nosocomial pneumonia, nosocomial UTI, complicated cellulitis, abdominal infections
About B-lactamase inhibitor combinations
provides broad spectrum coverage, enhance gram - and anaerobic coverage. Useful in anaerobic infections and polymicrobial infections like abscess, diabetic foot, abdominal infections, animal bites, resistant pathogens
