B: HypERthyroidism Flashcards
Can you get swollen glands from Hyperthyroidism?
Yes
What is Hyperthyroidism?
Overactive Thyroid
Usually due to Pituitary’s control of thyroid due to TSH released by the anterior lobe, which releases TSH to stimulate Thyroid to release T3 and T4.
If T3 or T4 is high, then the Hypothalamus will decrease it’s secretions, leading to hypothyroidism (negative feedback)
If T3 or T4 is low, then Hypothalamus will increase it’s secretions, and lead to HyPERthyroidism
BUT in primary Hypothyroidism, TSH is high, and in secondary it’s low, due to downregulation, or Hypothalamus not able to complete its task.
What is a classic sign of Hyperthyroidism?
Thin, easy to anger, lots of fire signs
Western Medicine for Hyperthyroidism?
Radiation plus active iodine to destroy the thyroid
Why does western medicine take such drastic action on HyPERthyroidism?
Because it can get out of control and damage the patient very easily, and is unpredictable to a certain extent
How do we know that a person has HyPERthyroidism?
- Blood Test
- 3 groups of Sx
a) hypermetabolism (feels hot, eats lots, sweats, skin feels hot and moist, skin is red, sweats easily in neck, armpits, low grade fever all the time, may have thyroid storm (T3 and T4 released fast and in high amounts, causing huge reaction - high fever, loss of consciousness, maybe death), tachycardia, palpitations, excess appetite but weight decreases instead of increasing, fatigue, agitation, sensitive, shaky hands, eyes and tongue shaky, insomnia, irritability, poor concentration, basal body temperature is usually high,
b) Swollen thyroid glands - diffused, symmetric, soft, mass goes up and down when swallowing
c) Exophthalmos - bulging eyes
Males vs Females with HypERthyroid?
Females 5: males 1
Age for Hyperthyroidsm?
20-40
POT for HypERthyrodism
Clear fire
Move blood
Disperse Nodules
Figure out if Excess or Deficient Heat
Can you use Moxa from HyPERthyroid?
Can use it because it disperses phlegm, usually moxa: UB 15, 18, 12, 13, Ren 22 Du 14 Du 16 St 26/Ren 12 if Excessive Appetite
Plum Blossom and Auricular
Same as Goiter
Plum blossom C1-7, downwards, front and back
Education for HypERthyroidsm
Similar to Goiter
- lots of sea veggies and food
- iodine in diet
DDx for HypERthyroidism
Tuberculosis - still has heat signs, but is in the lung, so there’s a cough with blood as well as those heat signs.
How do you know if full time rest should be recomended with HyPERthyroidism?
Heart rate over 100 BPM
Acupuncture Tx length for Hyperthyroidism?
At least 6 months, combo of western and TCM
low dose of meds plus TCM = Decreased side effects but increased results
