B + B exam part B content Flashcards
Unlike LTM and STM what is working memory more proficient in?
Dynamic tasks such as speech and spatial awareness
What is Millers law in reference to working memory?
WM can store 7 +/- 2 categories that humans can distinguish (smell, touch ,taste etc)
What are the three theories of working memory capacity that Oberauer et al (2016) investigated?
Decay
Resources
Interference
What is Decay in WM?
WM is limited because activation fades over time
What is meant by resources in WM?
WM is limited due to one shared resource being used across multiple different tasks
What is meant by interference in WM?
When overlapping features of learnt stimulus causes confusion
How did Oberauer et al (2016) test the theories of capacity on WM?
Outlined 3 stages of testing that the theories would go through and gave them a score based on their performance
What did Oberauer conclude was the most prominent theory of WM capacity?
Interference as it preformed the best out of all 3 stages
What is one of the main behaviours that executive function carries out?
Inhibitory control
What is inhibitory control in executive function?
control over attention, behaviour, thoughts and emotion
How does delayed gratification test inhibitory control? (usually a test for children)
People taking the test have to withstand the urges to accept the quick gratification and are later rewarded with more
How did Miyake and Friedman (2012) investigate variance in executive function?
They focused on the executive functions of, inhibition, shifting and updating and tested them amongst a group of participants
What were the two features of EF that Miyake and Friedman concluded?
EF has unity as well as diversity
What is mean by unity in EF?
We all have the ability to maintain some level of goal related information
What is meant by diversity in EF?
There is some flexibility in EF due to instances such as genetic contributions
