B + B exam part A content Flashcards
Define attention
The ability to select and process information from the environment
State three types of attention
selective
Spatial
Temporal
What is spatial attention?
The ability to focus on a specific area of the visual field
What is selective attention?
Focusing on a specific thing while simultaneously ignoring others
What is temporal attention?
prioritizing relevant information at a specific time
What is meant by neglect in attention?
Brain damage to a certain hemisphere causes a lack of awareness to a persons visual field
Describe one of the symptoms of someone with neglect
Inability to draw a clock properly, with all of the numbers being on the right side of the clock with none on the left.
Who investigated Neglect in Attention in 1998?
Dr Robert Rafal
What is meant by extinction in attention?
Difficulty in perceiving multiple stimuli of the same type at the same time.
Give an example of a symptom of extinction in attention
If two stimuli are present a patient with extinction can only perceive the stimulus on the side of the intact hemisphere
What does patient F.D studied by Pavani et al showcase?
Extinction by only being able to perceive stimuli presented to the left hemisphere
Define Aphasia
Disturbance of the comprehension and production of language following brain damage
What areas of the brain are typically associated with language?
Broca’s
Wernicke’s
Describe the symptoms of a person with Wernicke’s Aphasia
Nonsensical speech that often has unnecessary words
Name one of Carl Wernicke’s patients in 1874
Patient K who displayed symptoms of Wernicke’s Aphasia
