(b) Atomic energy spectrum Flashcards
What will an element do when high energy electricity is passed through it?
Emit light.
How can this light be analysed?
By passing it through a prism, defraction grating or spectroscope.
What is produced when this light is passed through an appropriate machine?
A series of coloured lines of lights.
What do these lines correspond too?
Specific frequencies and wavelengths.
What is this series of lines known as?
Atomic emission spectra.
What is important about the AES?
No 2 elements have the same AES.
How is the spectrum produced?
When energy is transferred to atoms, the electrons within the atoms are promoted to higher energy levels.
An atom will only emit a photon of light when an excited electron falls back down too a lower level.
What does the frequency of the line in the AES correspond too?
The difference in energy between the 2 electronic energy levels.
