Axilla Flashcards
How many borders does the axilla have?
6
What structures make up the 6 borders of the axilla:
- Apex
- Base
- Anterior wall
- Medial wall
- Lateral wall
- Posterior wall
-
Apex: axillary inlet
- Lateral border of first rib
- Superior border of scapula
- Posterior border of clavicle
- Base:
-
Anterior wall:
- Pectoralis major
- Pectoralis minor
- Subclavius muscle
-
Medial wall:
- Serratus anterior
- Thoracic wall
-
Lateral wall:
- Intertubercular groove
-
Posterior wall
- Subscapularis
- Teres major
- Latissimus dorsi
What are the six groups of axillary lymph nodes?
APICAL
Anterior
Posterior
Infraclavicular
Central
Apical
Lateral
What is the contents of the axilla? (5)
- Axillary artery
- Axillary vein
- Brachial plexus
- Axillary lymph nodes
-
Muscle tendons:
- Biceps brachii (short head)
- Coracobrachialis
What are the 3 routes by which structures exit the axilla?
- Inferiorly and laterally into upper limb
- Quadrangular space
- Clavipectoral triangle
What is the quadrangular space?
In posterior wall of axilla
Allows access to posterior arm and shoulder area
What is the clavipectoral triangle?
Opening in anterior wall
- Pectoralis major
- Deltoid
- Clavicle
Cephalic vein enters via triangle
Medial and lateral pectoral nerve leave
What is throracic outlet syndrome?
Vessels and nerves become compressed between bones in apex of axilla
What are some common causes of thoracic outlet syndrome?
Trauma
Repetitive movements
Cervival rib (extra rib)
How does thoracic outlet syndrome present?
Pain in affected limb
Tingling
Muscle weakness
