Action: Move scapula forward, rotate scapula; Origin: Ribs 1-8; Insertion: Medial border of scapula
External Intercostals
Action: Elevate rib cage, aid in inspiration; Origin: Inferior border of rib above; Insertion: Superior border of rib below
Internal Intercostals
Action: Depress rib cage, aid in expiration; Origin: Superior border of rib below; Insertion: Inferior border of rib above
Diaphragm
Action: Prime mover of inspiration, flattens when contracts, lengthens thoracic cavity
Rectus Abdominis
Action: Flex and rotate vertebral column; Origin: Pubic crest and symphysis; Insertion: Xiphoid process and ribs 5-7 (cartilage)
External Oblique
Action: Flex and rotate vertebral column, trunk rotation and lateral flexion; Origin: Ribs 5-12; Insertion: Pubic crest and iliac crest, linea alba
Internal Oblique
Action: Flex and rotate vertebral column, trunk rotation and lateral flexion; Origin: Iliac crest, inguinal ligament, lumbar fascia; Insertion: Ribs 9-12 (cartilage), linea alba, pubic crest
Transversus Abdominis
Action: Compress abdominal contents; Origin: Ribs 6-12 (cartilage), inguinal ligament, lumbar fascia; Insertion: Pubic crest, linea alba
Trapezius
Action: Extend neck; raise, rotate, and adduct scapula; Origin: Occipital bone and spinous process of C7 and processes of thoracic vertebrae; Insertion: Acromion and spine of scapula, lateral third of clavicle
Latissimus Dorsi
Action: Arm extension, adduct and rotate arm; Origin: Spinous process of T6-L5, iliac crest; Insertion: Intertubercle sulcus of humerus
Erector Spinae: Longissimus, iliocostalis, spinalis
Action: As a pair: extend neck and vertebral column; Origin: Iliac crest, transverse process of C7-T12; Insertion: Occipital bone and spinous process of cervical vertebrae
Epicranius Frontalis
Action: Raises eyebrows; Origin: Aponeurosis; Insertion: Skin of eyebrows
Epicranius Occipitalis
Action: Pulls scalp posteriorly; Origin: Occipital bone; Insertion: Aponeurosis
Orbicularis Oculi
Action: Close eye lids; Origin: frontal and maxillary bones; Insertion: Skin of eyelid
