the British Psychological Societies code of ethics
is a set of guidelines to consider in the planning and running of research so that they meet acceptable standards of behavior
Respect individual and cultural differences
avoid unfair and prejudiced behavior
Competence
the researcher has the experience to deal with potential ethical issues
informed concent
participants understand the aims of the research and its anticipated outcomes - guardianship is required for young children
deception
this is the alternative to informed consent
if there is no alternative, the hypothesis couldn’t be tested otherwise
discomfort and distress
protecting participants against harm - there shouldn’t be any physical or psychological harm
confidentiality
participants details need to be kept confidential - anonymity is created by giving individuals a code
right to withdraw
participants should be informed that they can end their participation at any point in the procedure
debriefing
after completing the procedure participants are given a full account of the aims of the study and a chance to seek some feedback
privacy
this applies to observational techniques and participants right to privacy
