6 months
what is the purpose of the NMS?
to support people with long-term conditions who are prescribed a new medicine to help identify problems early and improve adherence
what is adherence?
how closely a patient follows the recommended advice from a healthcare professional
what can adherence be affected by?
- side effects
- concerns about taking the medicine
- advice not fitting in with daily life
what are the 3 steps of the NMS? when do these steps occur?
- engagement: when dispensing 1st prescription
- intervention: 7-14 days later
- follow up: 14-21 days after intervention
what does a pharmacist do in the NMS?
- check use of medicines, presence of side effects and answer questions
- make sure the patient is taking them correctly
why is the NMS important for blood pressure medications?
- usually a long-term treatment
- lack of visible symptoms can reduce adherence
- side effects are common
