AVIT 414 Final Flashcards
What are the characteristics of learning? Describe them
Result from an experience: Cant teach something unless you experience it
Active Process: The student must be involved
Multifaceted: More than just memorization. Teaching in different methods. Think about the students attitude
Purposeful: the Why. If there is no purpose there is no reason to learn it
What are the Levels of learning? Explain them
Rote: Ability to read back (what is Vy?)
Understanding: Being able to comprehend or grasp the “how” or “why”
Application: The act of putting something to use that has been learned
Correlation: Taking what has been learned and/or understood and applying it to new or old concepts. (Rectangular course relates to the traffic pattern)
What does it mean to be a professional flight instructor?
Doing the right thing all the time
Being On time
Dressing the part
Using proper language
Be Prepared
What are the Laws of Learning?
Readiness: We learn best when we are ready to learn (IMSAFE)
Exercise: Things most often repeated are best remembered
Effect: Learning is stronger when it is accompanied by positive feelings
Primacy: Things first learned are better remembered
Intensity: Students will learn better if the intensity is real
Recency: Things most recently learned are he best remembered
How to minimize learner frustration?
Approach the learner as an individual Motivate the learner Keep learner informed Be consistent Admit errors
What are the Levels of learning? Explain them
Rote: Ability to read back (what is Vy?)
Understanding: Being able to comprehend or grasp the “how” or “why”
Application: Putting something to use that has been learned. Applying what the student understands.
Correlation: Taking what has been learned and applying it to new concepts
What are the eligibility requirements to become a CFI?
Be able to read, write, speak English
Commercial pilot cert or ATP
Must have instrument Rating
Must have done spin training
Must have taken FOI/FIA
Must have 15 hours of PIC in make and model
What records must a CFI keep? and for how long
Each person you’ve given instruction towards with:
Solo endorsement
Knowledge test with: Kind of test, name, date, and results
Practical test
Must be Kept for 3 years
What are the additional flight instructor responsibilities?
Pilot supervision Pilot proficiency See and avoid responsibility Learners pre-solo flight thought process Evaluation of student pilot abilities Practical test recommendations Flight instructor endorsements Additional training & endorsements
How to minimize learner frustration?
Approach the learner as an individual Motivate the learner Keep learner informed Be consistent Give credit where credit is due Admit errors
What is a positive transfer of learning? Give an example
If learning “A” helps in learning “B”
What is a negative transfer of learning? Give an example
If learning “A” Hinders learning “B”
What are the characteristics of a good lesson plan?
Unity: Lesson completes the objective
Content: Include new material but also go back and review previous material
Scope: Appropriate amount of material
Practicality: Appropriate to the conditions (aircraft vs. ATD)
Flexibility: Ability to adjust to the students strengths and weaknesses
Relation to course of training: The overall goals for the block
Instructional steps: Preparation, presentation, application, and review and evaluation
What are the characteristics of an effective assessment?
Objective = Cant have any personal opinion of individual
Flexible = Ability to adjust to the student and training
Acceptable = Student has to believe in the assessment
Comprehensive = What needs to be discussed
Constructive = student must benefit
Organized = an order that can be understood
Thoughtful = think about what you are saying. Be polite
Specific = The instructor must be detailed
What is Parasite drag, Induced drag, and skin friction drag? How are they affected in flight?
Parasite: Increases as speed increases. Comprised of all the forces that work to slow an aircrafts movement
Form drag: depends on the shape of the aircraft
Skin Friction: The resistance of the skin of the aircraft
Interference drag: Comes from intersections of airstreams that create current or turbulence
Induced Drag: “Pilot Induced” AOA of aircraft. Less AOA less induced drag
What are the Defense Mechanisms
Denial: Refusing to accept reality
Compensation: Pointing out your strength to hide your weakness
Projection: A person places their own short comings on to someone else
Fantasy: Daydreaming about how things could be rather than how things are
Displacement: Unconscious shifting of emotions/feelings from the original object to a substitute that is less threatening.
Rationalization: Subconscious technique for justifying actions that otherwise would be unacceptable
Repression: Uncomfortable thoughts into the unconscious mind
Reaction formation: A person fakes a belief opposite of how they really feel
What are the Communication Barriers
Confusion between the symbol and the symbolized object
Overuse of abstractions
Interference
Lack of common experience
What are the characteristics of an effective question?
Applies to the subject
Is brief and concise, but clear and definite
Is adapted to the learners ability, experience, and stage of training
Centers on only one idea
Presents a challenge
What are insights?
Grouping your perceptions into something meaningful?
What are the Domains of Learning?
Cognitive: Process of thinking and learning
Affective: Attitude
Psychomotor: Skills
What are the Good Communication Elements?
Source - Do they understand
Symbol - Words, Signs, Language
Receiver - Listener, reader, student
What is in the Instructor Tool Box
Do not interpret Do not judge Think before answering Be close enough to hear Watch your non-verbals Be aware of biases Underlying feelings Concentrating
What is Maslows Hierarchy of needs
Physiological
Safety and Security
Love and Belonging
Self-esteem
Self Actualization
