Avionics Flashcards
EAWS
Safety concerns with Avionics
operation of radar, MIMS, external power with CB and switches in proper positions, secure power and grounding
Barometric Altimeter
pitot-static pressure to indicate altitude above sea level
Radar Altimeter
radio echos to determine altitude above ground level
VHF/UHF
Very-High Frequency and Ultra-High Frequency ; communicate with other a/c, ground stations, shipping traffic and coastal stations (AJ ; anti jam radio frequency transmission)
What is IAS and its purpose
Intercommunication Audio System ; provide amplification and routing of audio signals between cockpit, ground crew, and rear cockpit
What is TACAN and its purpose
Tactical Air Navigation ; relative bearing and slant range distance to a ground station or similar equipped a/c
What is INS an its purpose
Inertial Navigation System ; detects a/c motion and provides acceleration, velocity, present position, pitch roll
Define GPS
Global Positioning System ; receives information from a satellite source, provides pilot an updated preset position time and velocity information
What is ARI and its purpose
Attitude Reference Indicator ; self contained pitch and roll attitude reference system without electronically driven gyro
What is ILS and its purpose
Instrument Landing System ; weather approach guidance system provides steering info during a/c approach by decoding azimuth
Define RADAR
Radio Detection and Ranging ; target detection, designation, tracking and navigation
Fiber Optics
improved system performance, immunity to electrical house, signal security and electrical isolation
Advantages and disadvantages of using fiber optics
faster, lighter, easier to break, purple fiber, glass coated with protection
Mission computers
communicate and provide data conversion w/o non-max avionic equipment
MIDS/JTRS
Data line between a/c multifunctional information distribution system
