Avigayil - Science Flashcards
Name the 8 characteristics of living things
cells, dna, reproduce, grow, respond, adapt, energy, internal balanced
What are cells?
All living things/the building blocks of life
What is DNA?
Genetic code
What does reproduce mean?
Off spring
What does grow mean?
Increase in size
What is respond?
A reaction to change in environment
What does adapt mean?
Change over time for survival
What is energy?
Energy is the ability to do work or cause change.
What is internal balance?
Internal balance refers to the maintenance of stable internal conditions in an organism.
What is the difference between unicellular and multicellular?
Unicellular organisms have only 1 cell, while multicellular organisms consist of multiple cells.
Give 2 examples of unicellular organisms.
Yeast and Bacteria.
Give 1 example of a multicellular organism.
Humans.
Name 5 living things needed to survive.
- Food and water 2. Oxygen 3. Living space 4. Proper temperature 5. Energy.
Explain food and water.
Food and water are sources of energy and are needed for growth, chemicals, and waste product removal.
Explain oxygen.
Oxygen is needed for respiration, and it creates CO2, which plants use for photosynthesis.
What is homeostasis?
Homeostasis is the ability of an organism to keep conditions inside its body stable even in the face of environmental changes.
What is living space in terms of organisms?
Living space refers to the limited area where organisms live, and animals often defend their own territory.
Name three things that food and water are used for.
- Growth 2. Repairs of body parts 3. Water transports chemicals and waste products.
What is the main source of energy for living things?
The sun.
What do plants use for photosynthesis?
Plants use CO2, sunlight, and chlorophyll.
What does multicellular mean?
Multicellular means having more than one cell.
What does unicellular mean?
Unicellular means having only one cell.
What does metabolism mean?
Getting energy by breaking down matter.
What does Homeostasis mean?
It can maintain the body temperature regardless of the outside temperature.
What does Heterotroph mean?
Can’t make its own food. Eats living things.
What does interdependent mean?
When 2 things depend on each other.
What is an organism?
A living thing.
What does stimulus mean?
A change in environment.
Will your heart rate increase or decrease after exercise?
It increases because 1. your muscle cells are working hard. 2. You use oxygen quickly/you reproduce more CO2 as a waste product. 3. When I ran, my heart rate went higher than when I was resting.
What effect does fresh water have on the body?
Fresh water causes your cells to expand.
What effect does salt water have on the body?
Salt water makes your cells become smaller.
