first recorded aircraft hijack
21 February 1931, in
Arequipa, Peru, when Byron Rickards (USA) was flying a Ford
Tri-motor from Lima, Peru to Arequipa. Once landed, he was
surrounded by soldiers and told he had just become the
prisoner of a revolutionary organization, but was later released
on 2 March of the same year.

of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP)

Lasting 40 days, it was the longest hijacking of a commercial flight

Philippine Airlines Flight 116
A flight on December 11, 1994 from Cebu to Tokyo
that was seriously damaged by a bomb, killing one
passenger and damaging control systems.
Authorities later discovered that Ramzi Yousef, a
passenger on the aircraft’s prior flight leg of Manila to
Cebu, had assembled the bomb in the aircraft’s
lavatory and tucked it into the life vest pocket
underneath his seat.
One hour after the bomb exploded, the pilot captain
landed the damaged 747 at Naha Airport, saving the
remaining passengers and crew.

Each Contracting State shall establish and implement a written
national civil aviation security programme to safeguard civil
aviation operations against acts of unlawful interference,
through regulations, practices and procedures which take into
account the safety, regularity and efficiency of flights
