AV32 - NORDO / RONLY - JB Flashcards
Define NORDO
No Radio - An expression describing an inability to communicate by radio owing to the absence or failure of radio equipment.
Define RONLY
Receiver Only - The capability to receive radio communications only, owing to the absence or failure of the transmitter.
What are the requirements for VFR A/C to operate to or from an uncontrolled aerodrome that lies within an MF NORDO?
1) Ground station must be in operation
2) Prior notice of the pilots intention to operate at the aerodrome has been given to the ground station
3) When conducting takeoff, the pilot ascertains by visual observation that there is no likelihood of collision with another A/C or vehicle
4) When approaching for landing, the A/C enters the aerodrome traffic circuit from a position that will require it to complete 2 sides of the circuit before turning final.
What is a ground station?
An FSS, CARS or RCO through which RAAS is provided.
What are the requirements for operating in an MF NORDO at night?
No different from day.
Can an A/C operate NORDO in SVFR?
No. Below VFR minima only.
What basic information is required from NORDO/RONLY A/C?
Ident, Type, departure/destination, ETA/ETD, planned altitude, A/C colours, intentions on field (inbounds), location on field (outbounds), other relevant info.
When giving AAS to a NORDO pilot, despite the fact that there will be a significant delay between AAS and arrival/departure, what information is given?
Current wind, current altimeter, runway always given as preferred, even if active. For arriving NORDO, all proposed and enroute A/C with an ETA/ETD that falls within 5 mins before till 10min after NORDO ETA shall be passed as traffic. For outbound NORDO, just before departure until 10min after departure is traffic, including active bay.
Circuit traffic is always passed.
Step 1 of information exchange between FSS and NORDO/RONLY pilot
Obtain basic information. Ident, type, ETA/ETD, colours, ect.
Step 2 of information exchange between FSS and NORDO/RONLY pilot
Provide information expected to be appropriate for the A/C.
Runway, wind, altimeter, NOTAM ect.
Step 3 of information exchange between FSS and NORDO/RONLY pilot
Obtain pilot intentions.
Intended runway, taxi route, apron, joining circuit, intentions after takeoff (left turn out, ect.) ect.
Step 4 of information exchange between FSS and NORDO/RONLY pilot
Summarise NORDO/RONLY procedures.
Phraseology for summary of NORDO/RONLY procedures for inbound A/C
“You will be included as traffic and vehicles will be removed from your intended runway from five minutes before until ten minutes after your ETA. You are required to call upon your arrival at (your airport), or if there is a change to your ETA.”
Phraseology for summary of NORDO/RONLY procedures for outbound A/C
“You will be included as traffic from just prior to your estimated or actual time of departure until ten minutes after. Vehicles will be removed from your intended runway and taxiway from just prior to your estimated or actual time of departure until you are airborne and clear of runway.”
“You are required to call destination ATS unit prior to departure and upon arrival.” (as applicable)
When do you provide departing NORDO/RONLY A/C as traffic to other A/C
Just prior to ETD or ATD until 10 min after, or, until the A/C is reported or observed clear of MF area.
