Why did Jesus’ followers wait so long before writing a record of his life and teachings?
Reason 1: In those days, information was usually passed around by word of mouth so Jesus’ message was kept alive by preaching to others about him.
Reason 2: As long as the disciples were alive, the information about Jesus was safe. It was only when they became older or died that there was a need to write it down.
Reason 3: Jesus’ early followers thought that Jesus would return to the world in their lifetime. It was only when they realised that this would not happen that they decided to keep a more permanent record.
Each gospel has its own themes and messages, but all four Gospels emphasise the following:
• Jesus is the Saviour, who offers forgiveness and love to all humans.
• Jesus cared deeply for the marginalised and the oppressed.
• Jesus’ miracles showcase his divine power and authority.
• His teachings and parables give important moral and spiritual lessons.
