autotrophs, heterotrophs and energy Flashcards
what are Autotrophs:
*Have chloroplast which use physical energy from sunlight to create stored chemical energy
*produce their own energy and food
what are Heterotrophs:
*require another organism to give them food and energy
*get chemical energy from other sources to create physical energy
photosynthesis.
*light physical energy to chemical energy
6CO2 + 6H20 —> C6H12O6 + 6O2
Carbon dioxide + water —-> Glucose + Oxygen
ATP
*Adenine Tri (3) phosphate (ATP) is stored energy within the cell, particularly the mitochondria
- Adenine is bonded with a ribose sugar
*Cells are continuously used and producing
ATP in what is known as the ATP cycle
- ATP is used to perform cellular functions
ATP cycle
*Energy required to fuel this process, that being ATP comes from cellular respiration
*In the ATP cycle the third phosphate bonded is hydrolyzed by water and broken off as a new bond form which in the process releases energy for the cell.
*This produces ADP which only has two phosphates.
*Then using energy from food (breaking down big molecules like glucose) another phosphate group is attached to the ADP for ATP to continue the cycle by reforming ATP.
*This cycle is essential as if ADP did not turn back into ATP then the cell would run out of energy to carry out cellular functions.
