Collection of blood leaking from damaged vessel (NOT CAPILLARIES)
- cannot age a bruise
- you can bruise after death
Abrasion
Graze or scratch
On epidermis
due to tangential force
due to vertical force
Laceration
Split to skin due to blunt force trauma
- deep and bleeding
Common where skin can be
COMPRESSED between the force and underlying bone - rare over fleshy areas
Cut
Split in skin = longer than it is deep
Stab
Split in skin that is deeper than long

- NOT BEEN SEEN BY DOCTOR after death or within 14 days before death 3. VIOLENT, UNNATURAL or SUSPICIOUS
- ACCIDENT
- NEGLECT
- INDUSTRIAL DISEASE - EMPLOYMENT
- ABORTION
- SURGICAL OPERATION
- SUICIDE
- POLICE or PRISON CUSTODY
- POISONING

- Allows a thorough examination of the deceased, the extent of their disease, their treatment and its effects
- audit
- effectiveness of treatment

- research
why is death certificate data useful?
- shows main causes of death
- helps divide funds more appropriately
differences between hospital and coroner autopsy?
- consent only for hospital
- hospital can take any material but the coroner cant
