Autonomic Nervous System drugs Flashcards
It sends impulses to the CNS
AFFERENT
It receives impulses, transmits through the spinal cord to effector organ cells
EFFERENT
Controls and regulates the heart, GI, respiratory system, bladder, eyes and glands
AUTONOMIC NS/ VISCERAL SYSTEM
Innervates the skeletal muscles
SOMATIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
It helps your body activate its “fight-or-flight” response and increases your heart rate and breathing ability while improving your eyesight and slowing down processes like digestion.
SYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
It is referred to as the “rest and digest” system, as it functions to conserve the body’s natural activity and relaxes the individual once an emergency has passed.
PARASYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM
Drugs act through receptors by binding to the receptors to initiate a response or prevent a response.
RECEPTOR THEORY
It is a drug that produces a response.
AGONIST
It is drugs that block a response
ANTAGONIST
It is a compound that inhibits the action of adrenaline (epinephrine), noradrenaline (norepinephrine), and other catecholamines that control autonomic outflow and some functions of the central nervous system at the adrenergic receptors or inhibits their release.
SYMPATHOMIMETICS/ ADRENERGIC AGONISTS
It is a chemical structure that has a catechol ring and amines.
CATECHOLAMINES
It is a chemical structure that has no catechol ring
NONCATECHOLAMINES
It is a drug that is a beta-blocker that affects the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins).
PINDOLOL
It is a drug used to control blood pressure and reduce sweating in people withpheochromocytoma (a tumor of the adrenal gland).
Phentolamine, Phenoxybenzamine
It is a drug used to manage and treat xerostomia and glaucoma. It is a muscarinic receptor agonist.
Pilocarpine
Stimulate and inhibit cholinergic function while increasing neurotransmitter production
NICOTINE
It is used to treaturinary retention (trouble urinating) that may be caused by surgery, delivering a baby, or other conditions.
BETHANECOL
It is a natural alkaloid anticholinergic agent that has potent antimuscarinic effects and is used by injection to treatsymptomatic bradycardia, severe bronchospasm, and to reduce vagal stimulation.
ATROPINE
Drugs that decrease or block the actions of acetylcholine on its parasympathetic nervous system receptors on smooth muscle cells, glands, and the central nervous system.
ANTI-CHOLINERGIC AGENTS
These medications can be used to treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate in addition to lowering blood pressure.
Beta Blockers
