Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
What are the two systems involved with the autonomic NS? (ANS)
Sympathetic NS and Parasympathetic NS
What is the ANS function?
Receives a continual supply of sensory input from sensory receptors which monitor to body internal environment to maintain homeostasis
How does the ANS operate?
It operates via a reflex arc in the hypothalamus, brainstem and spinal cord
What parts of the body does the ANS control?
Involuntary control of smooth muscles, cardiac muscles and glands
What is the Sympathetic NS responsible for?
Promotes ‘flight or fight’ and inhibits non-essential activities. (Sixs E’s) emergency, embarrassment, exercise, excitement and energy expenditure.
What is the parasympathetic NS responsible for?
Restoration and conservation of body energy. The three decrease: - decreased heart rate - decreased airway diameter - decreased pupil diameter 'rest and digest' are where these actions are promoted 'SLUDD' - salvation - lacrimation - urination - digestion - defecation
The corticobulbar tracts convey nerve impulses that control movements of the
head and neck
What part of the brain receives information about planned activity, compares this with actual movements, and supplies corrective feedback signals to other parts of the brain?
Cerebellum
