Areas of the Cerebral Cortex Flashcards
Name the four lobes
Frontal, Parietal, Occipital, Temporal
What is the primary motor area responsible for? And where is it located?
Initiates voluntary movement. Located in the frontal lobe
What is the premotor area responsible for? And where is it located?
Controls a sequence of motor activities such as driving. Located in the frontal lobe
What is Broca’s area responsible for? And where is it located?
Directs muscles involved in speech production. Located in the frontal lobe
What is the anterior association area responsible for? And where is it located?
Concerns, personality, intelligence and initiative. Located in the frontal lobe
What is the primary somatic sensory area responsible for? And where is it located?
Receives nerve impulses for touch, itching, vibration, temperature and pain. Located in the parietal lobe
What is the somatic sensory association area responsible for? And where is it located?
Allows for identification of an object being touched using stored memory and past experiences of an object. Located in the parietal lobe
What is Wernicke’s area responsible for? And where is it located?
Interprets the meaning of speech by recognising spoken words. Located in the parietal lobe
Where is the primary auditory area responsible for? And where is it located?
Receives nerve impulses from the ear to determine such as pitch, loudness and location. Located in the temporal lobe
Where is the auditory association area responsible for? And where is it located?
Allows identification of a sound as speech, music or noise. Located in the temporal lobe
Where is the primary visual area responsible for? And where is it located?
Receives visual identification and is involved in visual perception. Located in the occipital lobe
What is the visual association area responsible for? And where is it located?
interprets visual stimuli enabling us to recognise a face
What is Sulci?
Shallower grooves in the brain
What is Gyri
Folds that increase the surface area and make up the folded surface area of the cerebral cortex
What is Fissure?
Deep grooves that subdivide the hemispheres
