Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
Divisions of ANS
sympathetic and parasympathetic
General functions of ANS
-maintenance of homeostasis without conscious thought
-respiration, circulation, digestions, body temp, metabolism, sweating, and the secretions of certain endocrine glands
Where are preganglionic cell bodies located in the sympathetic nervous system?
between T1 and L2 (thoracolumbar division)
Where do axons project in the sympathetic nervous system?
sympathetic ganglia: sympathetic chain ganglia and collateral ganglia
Where are preganglionic cell bodies located in the parasympathetic system?
within craniosacral division; axons from the brain are in cranial nerves III, VII, IX, and X and from the spinal cord in pelvic splanchnic nerves
Two types of cholinergic receptors and what they bind
Nicotinic and Muscarinic
-bind acetylcholine
Where to find nicotinic receptors
all receptors on postganglionic neurons, all skeletal muscles, adrenal glands
Where to find muscarinic receptors
all receptors on parasympathetic effectors, receptors of some sweat glands
Adrenergic receptors and what they bind
Alpha and beta receptors
-bind norepinephrine/epinephrine
metabotropic receptor
muscarinic (mAChRs)
ionotropic receptor
nicotinic (nAChRs)
