Autonomic Drugs Flashcards
Drugs that act on receptors activated by Ach (muscarinic and nicotinic)
Cholinergic drugs
Drugs that act on receptors activated by NE or E
Adrenergic drugs
Cholinergic agonists that look and act like Ach
Direct Acting
Cholinergic agonists that increase the amount of Ach
Indirect Acting
Drug used for diagnosis of myasthenia gravis
Edrophonium
Drug of choice for myasthenia gravis
Neostigmine
Drug for maintenance of myasthenia gravis
Pyridostigmine
Site of action of ganglionic blockers (cholinergic antagonist)
Nicotinic receptor
Site of action of antimuscarinic drugs (cholinergic antagonist)
Muscarinic receptor
Site of action of neuromuscular blockers (cholinergic antagonist)
Nicotic receptor on striated muscle
Atropine is a ganglionic blocker. True or false?
False.
It’s an antimuscarinic drug.
The three antimuscarinic drugs used to TREAT the manifestations of Parkinson’s disease
Benztropine
Trihexyphenidyl
Biperiden
Why are ganglion-blocking drugs not commonly given?
They also stimulate the sympathetic so they have so many side effects.
Representative of ganglion-blocking drugs
Trimetaphan
Antimuscarinic drug that is important in producing complete skeletal muscle relaxation in surgery
Neuromuscular blockers
Prototype of non-depolarizing NM blockers
Tubocurarine - competitive blocking at NMJ leading to flaccid paralysis
Why is succinylcholine used as a muscle relaxant when it’s a nicotinic agonist?
Succinylcholine is an Ach mimic. It will stimulate muscle contraction. The muscle contraction will be sustained, leading to muscle weakness.
Antimuscarinic drugs that increase cholinesterase
Cholinesterase regenerators
