Automic Nervous Dustem Flashcards
Autonomic nervous system
A network of neurons that carries neural messages between the central nervous system and the heart, lungs and other organs and glands.
The autonomic nervous system regulate the functioning of the body’s visceral muscles such as organs and glands without being consciously aware of it, however, it is possible to exert some control over ANS responses, typically this can be done through biofeedback
Parasympathetic NS
The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for maintaining optimal levels are functioning of the viscreal muscles. It also return the body to a state of homeostasis after the heightened state of arousal of a sympathetic response such as heart rate returning to resting levels
Sympathetic NS
The sympathetic nervous system activates the internal muscles, organs and glands to prepare the body for vigourous activity, or to deal with a stressful situation. It releases adrenaline, increases heart rate and respiration and dilates the pupils. To allow this to happen other psychological functions are suppressed. The sympathetic nervous system also activates the fight- flight -freeze response
Fight-flight-freeze response
Is initiated by the sympathetic Nervous system and prepares the body to confront a stressful situation to optimise the chances of survival
